In a small, poverty-stricken village in northern India, a group of children know the hard truth that Chamatkar is a girl's name. However, this becomes a source of constant humiliation for them as they are rejected from society because their gender. When challenged to prove her worth as a boy, 12-year-old Chamatkar takes center stage and becomes an accomplished wrestler. She is now able to lift her family out of poverty as well as showcase India as it should be portrayed--as one of the most powerful nations in the world. With this uplifting story and stellar acting performances by its young cast members, we find ourselves cheering for Chamatkar throughout the film. This is followed up with a stirring, inspiring dialog that details the essence of her character. Chamatkar was produced by Itwari Pictures, New Adventure Pictures and India's popular production house Vishesh Films. Filming took place in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat. The entire production was shot in English so it could be shown to the world in any cinema country in Europe or America. The film was released on April 29, 2012 in 150 theatres in America - the first Hindi film to be screened in Western India with English subtitles. They were also screened at world-class cinemas all across Europe including Cannes, Dublin International Film Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival and Stockholm International Film Festival. The film was released on DVD in America on May 13, 2013 by Lionsgate. The DVD was distributed by Akash Audio Visuals. The music is composed by Ravi Sharma. The song "Tera Mera" is based on the Qawwali song "Nagada Sang Dhol Baja" by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Party. On April 27, 2012, India's top newspaper The Times of India awarded Chamatkar 4 stars saying it's a must-see for all patriotic Indians who want to know more about their country. Hollywood Reporter called it 'a stirring film that reclaims India's reputation as an economic powerhouse.' On May 10, 2012, Filmmaker Magazine awarded 3 stars (see DVD cover). On July 10, 2012, the film was selected as a "Festival Classic" by American critics at the SoCal Film Festival in Los Angeles.Chamatkar received a lot of praise from Hollywood giants such as Emma Watson and Will Smith. Others: The main cast was praised for their performances. The young actors earned themselves a big break in mainstream films after Chankya Chamatkar. When the film was released in India on April 29, 2012 it had the highest initial collections for a Hindi film in 2012. Chamatkar was released on DVD in parts of Europe and America on July 24, 2013. It was given a rating of "PG" in England by the British Board of Film Classification. Lionsgate Entertainment released Chamatkar on DVD in America on May 13, 2013 with an English subtitle version.
